HOME EXPERIMENT

Pad experiment: we poured, pressed, then cut it open and looked inside

We poured coloured liquid onto our night pad, waited, put a paper towel on top, pressed it and looked at the towel. Then we cut the pad open. This is a home experiment, not a laboratory test; below we describe every step you see in the video.

STEP BY STEP

What did we do?

  1. 1

    Poured

We poured coloured liquid onto the middle of the night pad.

  2. 2

    Waited

We waited for the liquid to soak into the pad.

  3. 3

    Pressed

We put a paper towel on the pad and pressed it by hand.

  4. 4

    Looked at the towel

We lifted the towel and showed it to the camera.

  5. 5

    Cut

We cut the pad down the middle with scissors.

  6. 6

    Looked inside

We opened the cut pad and looked closely at its inner layers.

We did not measure the amount of liquid or how long we waited and pressed.

What does the video show?

In the video you see the liquid being poured onto the pad, the towel being shown to the camera after it is pressed, and the pad being cut so its inner layers can be opened. We have not added any comment on the result: judge what you see for yourself.

What did we edit in the video?

The footage is real. To keep the video short we sped up the waiting and cutting parts and briefly froze the frame where we show the towel; the close-up at the end is from another take of the same experiment. We added only text, a label and hand-drawn marks on top.

AT HOME

Try the experiment yourself

  1. Put the pad on a flat surface, for example a plate.
  2. Pour a little water onto the middle and wait a while. To see it more easily, you can add a few drops of food colouring to the water.
  3. Put a paper towel on top and press it by hand.
  4. Lift the towel and look at it.
  5. If you like, cut the pad with scissors and look at its inner layers.

Do not use the pad from the experiment afterwards. Be careful with the scissors.
