## What Is Chasteberry? What Are Its Benefits for PMS?

Hello! Today we're putting under the scientific microscope chasteberry, also known as Vitex agnus-castus, which we see often in our pharmacies and which is considered one of the "gold standards of phytotherapy" when it comes to women's health.

What changes in our body during that difficult time we call [premenstrual syndrome (PMS)](https://www.carewithki.com/en/discover/sweet-cravings-and-mood-swings-before-your-period) in particular, and where does chasteberry stand in this change? Let's look at it from a pharmacist's point of view.

### What Is Chasteberry?

Chasteberry is a shrub native to the Mediterranean basin, with flowers ranging from purple to blue. In pharmacy, we use the fruit of this plant (Vitex agnus-castus fructus). The iridoid glycosides, flavonoids and essential oils it contains are responsible for the plant's biological activity.

The most important feature of chasteberry is that it contains no hormones directly. Instead, it has a modulating effect that helps the body manage its own hormonal balance (especially via the pituitary gland).

### The Scientific Benefits of Chasteberry Before Your Period

The symptoms we experience before our period, such as irritability, breast tenderness and water retention, are usually rooted in a slight rise in the hormone prolactin and the resulting oestrogen/progesterone imbalance. This is where chasteberry steps in, with three main mechanisms:

- Dopaminergic Effect and Prolactin Control: The compounds in chasteberry fruit suppress high prolactin levels by binding to dopamine receptors. Balancing prolactin is among the strongest scientific evidence for reducing pre-period breast pain (mastalgia).
- Regulating Mood: Thanks to its regulating effect on the dopamine and opioid systems, it gives positive results for irritability (getting angry easily) and a depressed mood, the characteristic symptoms of PMS.
- A Cycle-Regulating Role: In cases of "luteal phase deficiency", where the hormone progesterone is insufficient, it helps the cycle run more regularly by supporting the release of LH (luteinising hormone).

### Take Care When Using It!

Chasteberry is a plant whose effect is "cumulative". Scientific studies show that regular use for at least 3 menstrual cycles is needed for clear improvement. In addition, people receiving [hormone replacement therapy](https://www.carewithki.com/en/discover/hormone-therapy-or-natural-supplements-in-menopause) or using birth control pills must consult a specialist because of the risk of interaction.
