> Period blood colour mainly reflects how quickly blood leaves the womb. Gynaecologists rarely focus on colour; bleeding volume, clot size and cycle regularity matter more (Cleveland Clinic).

Fresh blood is bright red; blood that stays in the womb for a while turns dark red, and old blood in the final days of a period turns brown. Gynaecologists rarely focus on colour; bleeding volume, clot size and cycle regularity matter more (Cleveland Clinic).

**In brief:**

- It is normal for colour to change from pink to red, then dark red and brown during a period.
- Small clots are usually normal; clots larger than 2.5 cm are a sign of heavy bleeding.
- See a doctor if you fill a pad every hour or your period lasts longer than 7 days.
- Grey or greenish discharge with an unpleasant smell is not period blood; it may signal an infection.

## What does period blood colour mean?

Period blood colours and meanings: pink on the first day or with very light flow, bright red for fresh blood leaving quickly, dark red for blood that has stayed in the womb a while, brown for old blood in the final days

According to Cleveland Clinic gynaecologist Dr Swapna Kollikonda, the colours generally mean:

### Pink

Most often seen on the first day. Fresh red blood looks pink when mixed with clear or milky vaginal discharge. It may also look pink when flow is very light.

### Bright red

Common in the first days of a period, indicating fresh blood flow. Womb contractions push blood out quickly, leaving no time for it to darken. Bright red may also appear with spotting between periods.

### Dark red

Seen a few days after a period starts. Blood that collects in the womb for a while darkens. It may be thicker and contain small clots.

### Brown

Seen in the final days, when blood is at its oldest. Mixed with vaginal discharge, it may look dark brown. For brown discharge outside a period, see [What Causes Brown Discharge?](https://www.carewithki.com/en/discover/brown-discharge-causes).

### Grey or greenish

These colours relate to discharge rather than period blood. Thin, grey-white, fishy-smelling discharge may indicate [bacterial vaginosis](https://www.carewithki.com/en/discover/what-is-bacterial-vaginosis); yellow-green, frothy discharge may indicate trichomoniasis (NHS). See a doctor if you notice this. For discharge colours, see [When Is Vaginal Discharge Normal?](https://www.carewithki.com/en/discover/normal-vaginal-discharge).

## What to monitor besides colour

According to Dr Kollikonda, blood colour is less informative than bleeding volume, clots and cycle regularity (Cleveland Clinic). The main things to monitor are:

- How often you change pads during a period
- The size and number of clots
- How many days your period lasts
- How often your periods occur
- Whether you bleed between periods

## Are period clots normal?

Small clots are usually no cause for concern (Cleveland Clinic). Blood that collects in the womb can clot, particularly on heavy days and with dark red blood.

According to the NHS, clots larger than about 2.5 cm are one sign of heavy menstrual bleeding. See a doctor if clot size or number changes, or clots appear when you have never had them before (Cleveland Clinic).

## Signs of heavy menstrual bleeding

According to the NHS, your period may be heavy if:

- You need to change a pad or tampon every 1–2 hours
- You need to use two products together
- Your period lasts longer than 7 days
- You pass clots larger than about 2.5 cm
- You bleed through your clothes or bedding
- Your period prevents everyday activities, or you often feel tired or short of breath
Causes listed by the NHS include fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, conditions that make bleeding easier and some medicines. Heavy periods can also occur in the first years of menstruation, after childbirth and approaching menopause. We explain how often to change pads in [Can You Use Panty Liners Every Day?](https://www.carewithki.com/en/discover/can-you-use-panty-liners-every-day).

## When should you see a doctor?

When to seek medical advice for period bleeding: clots larger than 2.5 cm or new clots, filling a pad every hour, irregular or prolonged periods, severe pain, bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause

According to Cleveland Clinic and the NHS, see a doctor if:

- You pass clots larger than about 2.5 cm or develop clots you have not had before
- You fill a pad every hour for at least two hours
- Your periods are more or less frequent than expected, or last longer than usual
- You have severe period pain
- You bleed between periods or after sex
- You have any bleeding after menopause
Cleveland Clinic notes that these symptoms may point to conditions such as polyps, fibroids or adenomyosis. For period pain, see [What Helps Period Pain?](https://www.carewithki.com/en/discover/what-helps-period-pain).

## Frequently asked

### Why is period blood dark?

Blood that collects in the womb for a while darkens. Dark red or brown blood in the later days of a period is therefore normal (Cleveland Clinic).

### Is period blood colour a sign of illness?

Usually not. Specialists rarely focus on colour; volume, clots and regularity are more informative (Cleveland Clinic). Grey or greenish discharge with an unpleasant smell may, however, signal infection.

### Is a smell during a period normal?

A healthy vagina also has a mild smell; discharge may smell slightly metallic during a period (Cleveland Clinic). A strong, fishy smell suggests an infection such as bacterial vaginosis (NHS); see a doctor.
